Common Freelancer Tax Questions

How much should a freelancer set aside for taxes?
Most 1099 workers should set aside 25–30% of net income. That covers ~15.3% SE tax plus federal income tax (10–22% at typical incomes). Higher earners may need 35%+. Use the SE Tax Calculator to get your exact number.
What is the self-employment tax rate for 2024?
15.3% on 92.35% of your net SE income. That's 12.4% Social Security (capped at $168,600) + 2.9% Medicare (no cap). You then deduct half of that SE tax from your AGI before calculating income tax.
When are quarterly estimated tax payments due?
Q1: April 15 | Q2: June 16 | Q3: September 15 | Q4: January 15 (next year). Owe $1,000+? You must pay quarterly or face an underpayment penalty.
What is the safe harbor rule for estimated taxes?
You avoid the underpayment penalty by paying either 90% of this year's tax OR 100% of last year's tax (110% if your AGI exceeded $150,000). Pay whichever is smaller.
Can freelancers deduct home office expenses?
Yes — two methods. Simplified: $5/sq ft up to 300 sq ft ($1,500 max). Actual: your business-use % of rent/mortgage + utilities + repairs. Space must be used regularly and exclusively for business.
What is the 1099-K threshold for 2024?
$5,000 for tax year 2024 (down from $20,000). The IRS plans to lower it to $600 for 2025. You owe tax on all self-employment income regardless of whether you get a 1099-K.
What is the QBI deduction and do I qualify?
§199A lets sole props, LLCs, and S-corps deduct up to 20% of qualified business income. At $80k net income that's a $16,000 deduction — saving ~$3,500 at the 22% bracket. Phases out above $182,050 (single) / $364,200 (married) for specified service businesses.
Should I form an S-Corp as a freelancer?
It depends on income. The S-Corp saves SE tax on distributions, but compliance costs ~$2,000/yr. Break-even is typically $50k–$70k net SE income. The Business Entity Comparison tool shows exact numbers for your situation.
