Yes. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal taxes for the year, the IRS requires quarterly estimated payments. Missing them triggers an underpayment penalty. The four due dates are April 15, June 16, September 15, and January 15. Use the Quarterly Tax Calculator or the Quarterly Safe Harbor tool to see exactly how much to pay each quarter.
Self-employment tax is the freelancer's version of Social Security and Medicare taxes — 15.3% total. As a W-2 employee, your employer pays half. As a freelancer, you pay both halves. It is calculated on 92.35% of your net SE income (profit after business expenses). The good news: you can deduct half of SE tax above-the-line on Schedule 1, which reduces your AGI and income tax.
Yes, if you use a portion of your home exclusively and regularly for business. You can use the simplified method ($5/sq ft, max 300 sq ft) or the regular method (actual expenses × business-use percentage). The deduction is limited to your net business income — you cannot use it to create a loss. Use the Home Office Deduction Calculator to compare both methods.
For the 2024 tax year, the 1099-K reporting threshold is $5,000 in gross payments. If you received more than $5,000 through platforms like PayPal, Venmo, Stripe, or eBay, the platform must send you (and the IRS) a 1099-K. Note: the threshold is dropping to $600 in future years per the American Rescue Plan Act. The 1099-K threshold is NOT the same as your taxable income — you still owe tax on any net profit regardless of whether you receive a form.
