The Best eBay Reseller Tax Calculator for Sellers Who Got a 1099-K and Panicked

Your eBay 1099-K shows gross sales. That number is not your taxable income. This calculator walks through every deduction — COGS, eBay final value fees (auto-calculated at 13.25% + $0.30/transaction), shipping, packaging, mileage, and returns — to show your actual taxable profit, SE tax, and quarterly estimated payment. Built because Hayden spent 7 hours on his eBay taxes.

01 / What most calculators miss
  • No COGS field. The most important deduction for resellers is what they paid for the inventory they sold — and most calculators don't even ask. Without COGS, every profit number is wildly overstated.
  • eBay fees are entered as a single mystery number. Most calculators ask for total fees without explaining how to find them or auto-calculating them. eBay's standard final value fee is 13.25% of the sale price plus $0.30 per transaction — this should be auto-populated.
  • No reconciliation of the 1099-K gap. Users need to see: 'You got a 1099-K for $15,000 but your actual taxable profit is $4,200.' Without this comparison, the form is terrifying and confusing.
  • Returns and refunds are ignored. eBay 1099-Ks often include refunded transactions in the gross total. Sellers need to subtract these before computing profit.
  • No explanation of COGS timing. Resellers commonly think buying more inventory reduces their current-year tax. It only reduces tax when the items are sold — not when purchased. This matters for cash-flow planning.
02 / What this tool does differently
COGS-First P&L (The Number That Actually Matters)

Enter what you paid for inventory at thrift stores, estate sales, and wholesale — this is your COGS and your largest deduction. The calculator builds the full P&L from the top: gross sales, minus returns, minus COGS, minus fees, minus shipping, minus packaging, minus other expenses = taxable profit.

Auto-Calculated eBay Fees (or Manual Entry)

Toggle between auto-calculation (13.25% of gross sales + $0.30 × number of transactions — eBay's 2024 standard rate for most categories) or enter your actual fees from the eBay Seller Hub. Either way, the formula is shown in ShowMath.

1099-K vs Taxable Profit Comparison

The key output is always displayed prominently: 'You owe tax on $X, not $Y.' The difference between what the 1099-K reports and what you actually owe tax on is often thousands of dollars — and most sellers don't know this.

Full SE Tax + Quarterly Payment

eBay reselling is self-employment income. The calculator computes SE tax (15.3% on 92.35% of profit), the SE tax deduction that reduces your AGI, federal income tax estimate, total tax bill, effective rate, and quarterly estimated payment due 4× per year.
