The 4% Rule

Your FI number is the portfolio size where you can live off investment returns indefinitely. The 4% safe withdrawal rate (from the Trinity Study) means you need 25× your annual expenses. At that level, historical data shows your portfolio survives 30+ years in almost all market conditions.

Returns and withdrawal rates are adjustable — lower withdrawal rates (3–3.5%) are more conservative for early retirees with longer horizons.
